Preview Evening of the Creative Arts Show 2015

We’re Here Now – Banbury Creative Arts Show 2015

Our projects were done, all work completed in the sketchbooks, and it was time for our final exhibition at Castle Quay Centre in Banbury. First we had to clean up our shop lot, put boards up, mask the joins with tape, and paint everything white so they’d act as a good, clean backdrop for our work. It was a group effort and we did most of the basic clean-up together, then worked on our areas individually with a lot of supportive advice asked for and given. here are some of the progress shots …

Getting it right …

Having been to a few other exhibitions like the Pick Me Up Festival recently, we had collected ideas for presentation of material and started preparing our spaces. I had a few illustrations apart from my final project triptych, and I put those up once I knew where the piece next to mine would be hanging. I chose bull dog clips as a clean, simple and non-distracting way of presenting the A3 and A4 printed pieces.

Just a peek at what’s up at the show. It runs till the 30th May 2015, and we’re open on Wednesdays – Saturdays, at the Castle Quay Centre, Banbury, so do stop by if you’re able to. Textile Artist: Anne-Marie Cadman

Anne-Marie Cadman was kind enough to meet up with some of us from Banbury Art College and give us a talk about herself and her work, as textile artist. I was pretty much blown away by her pieces on both fabric and paper, they are bright and gorgeous. I want one of her scarves!

Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festival part 2

Phew, we’re in the last stretch before final assessments at college, so excuse the lateness of this post. It’s the rest of the exhibition over at the Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festival at Somerset House in London. There was so much to explore and see, and we spent an excellent morning there. We were also checking out the various ways in which the artists or studios showcased their work, looking out for ideas for presenting our own work at the end of the year exhibition.

Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festival part 1

We went for a class outing to the Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festival at Somerset House in London. What a visual feast. There was so much to see, and I took so many photos, that I’m going to have to divide them all into two posts. In this first one are some of the artists that were exhibited along with a peek into their process, which I found fascinating.

Had an ‘ooops’ moment when playing with art on fabric last week. It all started out fine, and I had fun dripping paint and merging colours on the screen:

Neuroscience Research: The Man Whose Brain Borrowed Nearby Identities

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks

The article, “The Man Whose Brain Borrowed Nearby Identities“, from the Science of Us website, is about a man who:

seemed to “lack a personal sense of identity” and would borrow the identity of whoever happened to be nearby: a hairstylist, an art therapist, and a member of the clergy, to name a few.

It’s a case that’s very similar to the one I’m illustrating from the case study, “A Matter of Identity” from the book that we’re using for our Neuroscience project, The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks.

I find both cases fascinating and horrifying at the same time, and it’s a challenge finding some way of interpreting, through art, their chaotic inner worlds, but I do enjoy a good challenge.
